Certain Saturdays (sometimes Fridays or Sundays), weather permitting, a group gathers outside the Harrow Road Cafe and divides into teams for Rugby’s version of Irish Road Bowling. No particular skill required, and open to all. We see which team can get the little iron ball through a course and back to the start with the fewest throws. Then the winning team gets a photo with the Shirley Hughes Trophy!
We keep in mind respectful distancing and suggest masking to protect ourselves & others. It’s about one hour of fun! [We do carefully mind any vehicles on Rugby Parkway with shouts of “CAR” as a warning to clear the roadway, where speed limit is 30.] Finish your evening with a meal or piece of pie at the Harrow Road Cafe, offering dine-in or take-out with picnic tables out front. Serving Fridays & Saturdays until 9 p.m. Eastern and Sundays until 6 p.m. (423-628-2350).
This game originated in Ireland using the balls shot during the Troubles leading up to the Irish Free State. There wagering plays a part, but not here! Check out their version on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab00HeByRkQ
