MARGARET HUGHES ROOM #3

A glimpse of Newbury Pond through the treetops greets lodgers in this spacious upstairs room. Even the bathroom has a window view!

It is named for the mother of Rugby founder Thomas Hughes, Margaret Wilkinson Hughes. She moved to Rugby at age 83, died here at 90 and is buried here in Laurel Dale Cemetery. She was a friend of Tennyson, was painted by Watts, and gave up a life among London’s literati to support her son’s colonization project in Tennessee. Her photograph hangs on the west wall.
