Historic Rugby’s annual “Ghostly Gathering” celebration will take place on October 20 and 27 (Saturdays) this year at 5:30 pm Eastern.
The yearly Halloween-season celebration is a favorite among village visitors, who enjoy a homemade chili dinner with dessert, followed by a ghost movie, then candle and oil lamp tours of several historic buildings dating back to the early 1880s.
During the tour, guests meet the “ghosts” of some of Rugby’s earliest residents and hear their stories, along with stories about the village’s numerous other ghosts (what would a Victorian English village be without a few good ghosts?)
This is followed by hot cider around a bonfire, with more spooky stories. (Stories move inside to the Rebecca Johnson Theatre in case of rain.)
Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children through the 12th grade.
This year, there are two featured add-ons: You can order a commemorative T-shirt with your ticket for an extra $20.
The Apothecary Shoppe & Museum
3:00 – 5:30 PM Eastern at Historic Rugby’s Uffington House.
The Victorian Era landed right on the cusp of institutionalized medicine, but homeopathy aided by the local pharmacist, who often acted as combined chemist and horticulturalist, continued to function as the dominant method of treatment, particularly in the rural South when a doctor might be days away.
The Uffington House Pop-Up Apothecary Shoppe & Museum will demonstrate this unique time-period with a cultural and environmental exhibit. This living history interpretation will include several display rooms with paraphernalia from Emily and Margaret Hughes, both women of the village who focused their efforts on gardening and social wellness, Amos Hill, Rugby’s original landscape artist, Dr. Kemp, the first doctor who resided in the village, and Thomas Fardon, the local pharmacist and blacksmith.
Walk amongst 1800s medical curios, pharmaceutical equipment, native and heirloom plants while enjoying a small buffet of nutriments infused with local vitality from Rugby residents complemented by a bar of remedies, featuring Hill’s Highball and Fardon’s Draught for Dropsy.
Lounge amongst history with living witches sipping tisanes and teas while waiting for your personalized tarot reading or relax on the lawn with croquet and horseshoes before the spooks come out to steal the show.
